I would like to show my support for Suud Olat for Minneapolis City Council for Ward 6, and ask for your consideration as well. (“St. Cloud State grad faces anti-Muslim backlash in bid for Minneapolis seat,” July 17 SC Times.)
You may ask yourself why a Midwestern farm girl from Ohio would be interested in endorsing a Somali refugee in another state. It’s a simple answer. I know Suud Olat and I know he is the best person for this position.
I met Suud about five years ago and have worked alongside him as an advocate to give a voice to people living in extreme poverty. When I heard Suud’s story as a refugee, I was struck by how many other people in this country had similar stories.
Suud Olat is a fine example of the American dream. Suud’s childhood as a refugee served as a catalyst to fuel his perseverance to succeed. His hard work paid off when he graduated from college with his degree, became a U.S. citizen and started working as a voice for other refugees in his community.
Suud’s integrity and positive attitude has allowed him to build relationships with community leaders, including world leaders in his homeland of Somalia, and will help him build lasting relationships to serve his community to the fullest.
Suud is a natural leader. Through his leadership and future-focused vision, Ward 6 will be able to feel they have a voice in their own destiny. Suud’s vision applies to all persons in his community regardless of race, religion, gender or any other form because Suud sees every person as all in it together: one people, one community, one world.
Suud’s vision for Ward 6 includes proactive development for long term growth including economic development, educational opportunities, entrepreneurial partnerships and community investment for long term sustainable solutions.
Suud Olat is a change maker. He knows the needs of his community. He’s not afraid to work hard. His perseverance, integrity, leadership and vision are the reasons why I endorse my friend for Minneapolis City Council. You simply can’t ask for a better person for the job.
